Books and More

Our library is a place of community and connection

“It’s safe, it’s quiet, it’s welcoming and it’s supportive.” That’s how Women’s Resources client intake worker Bozena Hall — hers is the lovely voice at the end of the phone when you call our offices — describes the newly renovated and reopened library.

And while yes, there’s a full wall of books on subjects from self-help to divorce, child care, LGBTQ+ issues, self-esteem, aging and more, the library offers all kinds of resources for women, children and the community in general. Located just inside the office building on Russell Street East in Lindsay, it also houses videos and DVDs, all of it searchable on Bozena’s computer if you’re looking for a specific subject.

The care that went into the space is evident as Bozena provides a tour. “We need to be women-centric and client-centric,” she explains. There’s a chair with sturdy arms that’s suitable for someone with reduced mobility, and toys for kids tucked away in an ottoman. There’s a computer station with its own printer so people can research local services they might need, and a phone with a dedicated line in case someone wants to make a private call. Bozena compiles lists of career information, jobs and community events in binders on the coffee table.

The thoughtful touches are everywhere. Bozena decorates the area to reflect the seasons and special events. There’s a water cooler and attractively organized bins of toiletries that visitors are welcome to take as needed. Beside that area is a neat array of information brochures from our community partners. “Some people like having something to hold onto — something they can give a friend,” Bozena notes.

The library is open to anyone to the public during office hours, Monday to Friday. You can search the catalogue online. Clients can borrow up to three DVDs for a week at a time. Books are loaned for 21 days.

“We couldn’t do this without community support,” Bozena says. “The feedback is very positive, and that encourages us to do even more.”
